Sports Illustrated rolled out its annual swimsuit iIssue with messaging this year highlighting body diversity and using buzzwords like “inclusive.” While including a variety of body types and gender orientations could be seen as a step forward, the esthetics of the photos – and the WNBA’s language around the promotion of its players who appear in the photo spread – feel like a step backward, says writer Frankie de la Cretaz.
